Facts and Research to Reveal the Paper Trail Myth

Hello, my name is Chris Myers and I am frustrated by the lack of common sense in the debate with electronic voting machines. For some reason, people are blindly saying that paper is the only way to guarantee security. With a little digging, you will find the arguments proponents of paper trails use are not actual solutions to the security issues, but create more potential problems with the voting machines and the paper they produce. This site is a first way to bring some logic back into the debate. The resources you will see here are solid resources, not spun summaries of news paper articles. I can be contacted by phone at 419-822-6758 or by e-mail at papermyth@plumbrook.com . Have a good resource? If so, send it to me by e-mail. I am sure that when you investigate the facts, you will realize current electronic voting machines are the most secure and reliable voting systems we have, and adding paper to voting machines is not the solution.

I am adding to this site daily, so stop back for recent updates. See below for recent news. Old articles and news are right and you can also browse articles, links, and news by topic through the links on the left

Thanks,

News Senators to abandon '08 e-voting paper trail mandate

WASHINGTON--Democratic senators on Wednesday made another push for banning electronic voting machines that lack paper trails, but they've backed away from doing so in time for next year's presidential election. Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), the chief sponsor of a contentious bill called the Ballot Integrity Act that proposes such changes, said she fears requiring all states to employ so-called voter-verified paper records in their systems, with some primaries only six months away, "could be an invitation to chaos." Earlier this year, she called for enacting such changes by 2008. Or you can read between the lines and say maybe they saw it not to be such a good option and don't want to tell people this right now.   Problems with paper trails?

Huh? I can't believe it!

Z Black Box Man who destroyed touch-screen voting machine is convicted

They are coming out of the woodwork...sounds just like the other sites out there.

""I was obligated to destroy it to the best of my ability," Young told Judge William E. Ford."

" Allentown Patrolman Edward Zucal testified that Young said that using electronic voting machines was a way for Republicans to alter the outcome of elections to overthrow Democrats. Young thought Diebold machines in particular had been programmed to commit voting fraud by Republicans, the police officer said.

Zucal said Young asked him to seize the machine and remove the memory card so that votes could not be counted.

The judge noted that the Rolling Stone article contained no references to party conspiracies. "

News Test finds flaws in paper-backup voting

According to the report, which contained exit interviews with 450 voters, 89.4 percent said they were confident in the accuracy and security of the system.

But the report also found that 86.9 percent expressed confidence in the existing touch-screen machines without the paper backup.

Handel said a measly 2.5 percent increase in voter confidence hardly justifies spending up to $80 million to replace the current system with paper backups. Beyond the question of whether such a slight increase in confidence is worth the investment, the report turned up a host of problems with the paper system, including paper jams.

Also, checking the paper for accuracy slowed voters down, no big deal in a low-turnout municipal election but a potential headache if the machines were used in a major statewide or presidential contest.

Debate Florida House panel rejects money for voting machine paper trail

TALLAHASSEE — Gov. Charlie Crist’s fellow Republicans on a House council rejected Friday his idea of buying voting machines that leave a paper trail, not just an electronic record, before approving a proposed $70 billion budget for the next fiscal year.

Democrats, a minority in both legislative chambers, offered budget amendments that would have at least begun replacing paperless touch-screens used in 15 of Florida’s 67 counties with optical scan voting machines. Both were defeated on straight party-line votes in the Policy and Budget Council.

The Senate’s proposed budget (SB 2800) also lacks voting machine money, but the chairwoman of that chamber’s Fiscal Policy Committee has offered assurances a “bill pot” of unallocated dollars could be tapped if separate legislation is passed to require a paper record.

Note: Let's hope they don't fall victim to the fear. Put the money and the resources into the voting workers and things will be better.

News FL Voting machines worked - Audit results

Voting machines worked - Audit suggests ballot design might have muddled Sarasota results

The voting machines used in Sarasota's disputed congressional election worked properly despite an unusually high number of blank ballots and widespread complaints that votes were lost, Florida officials said Friday.

After conducting a test election and inspecting the computer codes running the touch-screen-voting machines, a state audit concluded that "there is no evidence that the results are in error."

The audit, however, suggested ballot design might have led to voter confusion in the race between Republican Vern Buchanan and Democrat Christine Jennings.

"I am confident that the race in Sarasota County was fair and accurate," said Secretary of State Kurt Browning, a Republican.

Note: There are many people holding this case up as an example of why we should not have the machines. Let's not let the facts get in the way of a good story....

  Z Black Box Holt's HR 811, A Deceptive Boondoggle -- 10 Blunders to Fix

Bruce O'Dell proves that even moderate legislation is not good enough. Looks like only good old fashioned paper will do the trick. I thought that was sooo yesterday...

It seems like the latest trend with DRE machines is to scheme up the best Hollywood scenario and then market it as like it can realistically happen.

"But... how will we know there are no wireless capabilities in the voting equipment, other than by trusting the vendor? As one excellent study has pointed out, it is by no means difficult to conceal a long-range wireless receiver within a chip inside a voting machine. Sounds far fetched? Such a custom chip would not only be relatively inexpensive to fabricate, it would be almost impossible to detect, and would, of course, provide an essentially unlimited return on investment."

News Feds OK pair of e-voting test labs

"With these two voting system test labs on board, we will begin the process of testing voting equipment to ensure that these systems meet all of the requirements to ensure accurate and reliable elections," EAC chairwoman Donetta Davidson said in a statement.

The two labs had already been recommended last month by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), which said it determined after a "comprehensive technical evaluation" that the labs were qualified to test the equipment. The EAC said it then did an "independent review" that focused on non-technical issues, such as the labs' conflict-of-interest policies, organizational structure and record-keeping practices.

Common Sense E-voting controversy overcasts its success

The ruptured election is the most glaring example of e-voting failure at a time when the technology is under fire in the court of public opinion. Politicians, researchers, commentators, voters’ rights groups and bloggers have all railed on e-voting in the wake of the scandal. But other studies, from equally credible sources, show something lost in the shuffle of the Florida election scandal: widespread improvements in vote counting.
